Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
