The winter recruitment period is typically a period of intense rumour and possible major transfers. A number of high-profile footballers find themselves connected to transfers away from their present clubs. We examine a selection of the top figures who could be on the move in January.

A. Semenyo

Despite Ghana's failure to reach the AFCON, which has left the forward in contention, reports suggest a significant move is imminent. This Bournemouth attacker possesses a deal with a £65 million buy-out clause applicable for a brief window at the start of the month. Latest reports suggest Manchester City are now the frontrunners for his signature. Former suitors such as Chelsea and Tottenham reportedly have turned their attention to other options, potentially opening the door for teams like Manchester United or Liverpool to attempt a late bid.

This English defender has continued to impress for Crystal Palace this season a previous transfer to Liverpool collapsing. As his deal due to run out in the summer, January is the London club's last chance to obtain a fee for their skipper. A host of elite sides, including Manchester City and multiple continental powerhouses including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona, are believed to be interested. B. Johnson

This Wales forward has had starting minutes limited at Spurs this term. Despite finishing as the side's top scorer last season, he has begun just a handful of Premier League games. Reports suggest the North London club is open to a sale for the correct valuation, believed to be in the region of forty million pounds. The Cherries appear to be at the front of the queue, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford additionally credited with an inquiry.

Tottenham rate the Welsh international at around £40m.

Rúben Neves

The Portugal playmaker might be set for a return to the Premier League after a period in Saudi Arabia. Still just twenty-eight, while his agreement expiring in the summer, he is a potential bargain. Clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United are linked with the player. Additionally, there are suggestions from Spanish media that he would be willing to accept a reduced salary for a move to the Spanish giants.

The veteran Germany shot-stopper finds himself as third-choice at Barcelona under new manager Flick. After fallen out of favour and had an operation, a winter departure seems increasingly likely. K. Yildiz

This highly-rated Turkey forward has been in excellent form for the Italian giants this season. With his existing contract running down, many Premier League clubs – including Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool – are keeping tabs on the situation. The Turin club are eager to secure the 20-year-old to a new long-term agreement but are in a race to retain one of the continent's brightest prospects.

Kees Smit

The much-admired Dutch midfielder has drawn parallels to Kevin De Bruyne for his style of play. After impressing at the Under-19 European Championship, he has broken into the AZ side. This teenager is widely expected to make a major transfer this month. Newcastle are believed to be leading the chase, but are facing strong competition from the Spanish champions for a deal valued at approximately £22 million.
