Catherine's Annual Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at the historic Abbey, with guests including royals, celebrities and local heroes who have helped their communities.

The large audience will listen to a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Compassion and Love

The focus of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a tumour, and who set up a charity, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the carol service.

A Steady Comeback

The royal has been undertaking her own measured re-emergence to the public eye following her health challenges and treatment, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Guests arriving at the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers backed by the Future Talent organisation, set up with the help of the former royal to widen access to musical tuition.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with awards contributing to equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be performing at the evening's event.

"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Carys's 11-year-old sister, Eliza, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many notable figures," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a young hero award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for local food charities.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with custom-created holiday decorations, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Among the musical performers will be recording artist Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
